Carity intlligence looked at eight foundations linked to pro sports teams together. They raised 47 millions dollars a year but the report says most of them hoard cash and spend too much on their own operations.

Here's one good measure how much of your donated dollars to the actual cause. A good benchmark is 75 cents, the Canadian Revenue Agency says it must be at least 35 cents one foundation, only gave 30 cents of each dollar towards its good works.

The CBC's Katie Nicholson drills down on the charities run by NHL teams on the ice Canada's NHL teams are performing well.
This season for the most part that's it but off the ice there are new questions about how their charities are using your money.

Watchingdog charity intelligence is giving NHL team charities low scores almost across the board.
When it comes to giving we don't want Canadians to confuse being a fan for your team with giving and donating, it just isn't smart giving one of the key measurements.

How much of every dollar actually goes toward charitable works, the average in Canada is 75 cents on the dollar.
Take a look at these NHL standings Winnipeg's True North Youth Fountation ten cents less than the national average sixty five cents.

The Jets are far from the worst in this charitable division the Ottawa Sens foundation comes in at 46 cents at rock bottom the Calgary.

Flames which sees just 30 cents of every dollar go to charitabke causes.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency, when a foundation sends less than 35 cents on the dollar to the cause that's a matter of concern.

We asked CRA if it was investigating the flames foundation, it says it can only report whether a charity has been sanctioned in a statement to CBC, it says if members of the public are concerned that a registered charity is not complying with the provisions of the Act.

They should report it the NHL charities, also took a hit for not being financially transparent only the Maple Leafs posted audited financial statements online.

They also make sure 79 cents of every dollar goes to charity when we asked the other teams for their statements, they refused the Ottawa Sens foundation doesn't agree with.
How charity intelligence measures transparency Charney intelligence.
Canada rate a poor transparentcy based on not just putting your actual audited financial statements on your website, and I am not sure if that's just the best qualification.

This lawyer says it isn't required by law but posting that information is best practice, the easiest thing for a large charity to do is put their financial statement up on the web, in fact to put multiple years something, these Vancouver fans can get behind think transparency is key so you know the more visibility the better and

Katie Nicholson has more from our Winnipeg newsroom, what are the team charities saying about this well in a joint statement, they told us the exceed the charity requirements of CRA and they point out they hire reputable accounting firms so for people who are interested in donating, what should they be looking for in a cherry well.

look for transparency does the charity post its audited financial statements on its website how much of each dollar you donate actually goes toward the cause rather than the administer the Canada Revenue Agency or charity

watching websites for information about charities but most important look for tangible examples of positive outcomes in your community.
